FAQ

RUN YOUR QUESTIONS BY US.

What is chip timing?

Chip timing is an electronic way to time your race. Your runner’s bib will contain two chips that record their time as they cross designated timing mats throughout the race and at the finish line. This information is fed into our race software so that we can produce accurate and lightning-fast results.

Where do you time?

We time all over New England, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Florida!

What are the advantages to chip timing?
There are many advantages to using chip timing at a race, including::
  • Accuracy. Very little room for human error.
  • Less manual work. Since the race is timed electronically, there is far less work to be done by hand. You do not need to provide finish line staff to mark the finish time of each participant, collect bib numbers, keep people in order down a chute, etc.
  • Speed of results. The results of races with multiple split points can be tabulated while the race is in progress. Your athletes will not be kept waiting around long for your awards ceremony.
When do you arrive at the race site?
We schedule our arrival to coincide with the time that you open Race Day Registration. We then:
  • Provide the numbered chips to your volunteers for distribution.
  • Enter race day registrants into our timing system.
  • Set up the finishing line area. This includes a chute so that spectators do not impede the finish of your athletes, a finish line clock, cones, speakers, and more!
What makes Second Wind Race Timing unique?

We know what it takes to put on a first-class event. We treat every aspect of your race as if it were our own. We cater to your athletes, delivering fast accurate results at your race site. Taking it a step further, we include a sound system with wireless microphone, Result Kiosks, and a 46″ Display for streaming results! This is included in your proposal. We do not include these as optional add-ons. We want to make sure that you put on top-notch event, and we include what others charge a premium for. (All of the add-ons are weather permitting. If the weather is a factor, and we decide not to set up the equipment for your event, you will receive a 10% discount off of your final bill.)

What about online registration? Can you handle that too?

You bet. We can administer your online registration at no cost to you. We’ve learned that it really helps to streamline the process and remove a burden from you, the Race Director. No more having to download your registrations or sharing your password. We take care of all of your registration for you.

How much will it cost for Second Wind Timing to time my race?

Probably less than you think. We typically charge a price per registered athlete. However, we can also arrange a flat price for your race if that will work better for your budget. Contact us so we can discuss your race!

How many volunteers do I need to provide for timing?

None. We bring a team with us. You have enough to do on race day. You don’t need to worry about supplying us with help as well!

Do you post results at the race site?

Of course! We stream results live online.  Additionally, we have our self services result kiosks (weather permitting) where athletes can print their individual results immediately after crossing the finish line. Further, we will email all of your participants with their results after the event concludes.

I'm organizing a first-time event. How will I be able to afford chip timing?

Chip timing may seem like a luxury, optional item, particularly for first-time races. However, you must think of the runner/athlete experience as an investment in next year’s race. We know from experience that chip timing will give your race a professional feel and keep racers coming back for years to come. It will also help make your first-time event a great success by reducing human error and missed times. All of these things will give a great first impression – you can always afford that!

Do you offer 'disposable' chips?

Yes. We use the latest (and greatest) in disposable chips, RFID “chips,” that are on the athlete’s bib. There is no hassle of trying to recover chips after a race. Athletes are welcomed to keep their bib and attached chips as a reminder of your race.

How accurate are your results?

In a word, very! The Race Result® equipment is German-engineered, and offers detection rates of 99.99%. We are very careful to ensure that we capture every bib as it crosses the line. Every runner will have 2 chips on their bib. We also utilize two finishing mats for your runners to cross. Our finish line chute ensures that runners cross both mats. We also utilize a hi-def digital camera that is tied into our system along with a manual back-up via time machine. In the unlikely event that the system misses a runner, we can quickly find that person, and get them entered into the system with their exact finish time.
